According to the United Nations: “International Women’s Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities.”

For 109 years, the day has been designated to acknowledge women’s advancements, successes and victories in the workplace around the world. It has been celebrated on March 8 for more than a century. The 2017 theme is: “Women in the Changing World of Work: Planet 50-50 by 2030”, and the focus is working toward achieving gender equality, empowering girls and women and promoting quality education and inclusion everywhere.

The value and contributions of women are immeasurable, and sending colorful flowers offers another measure of validation, acceptance and endorsement for their efforts. Women are instrumental in education, healthcare, human rights, agriculture, science and every work discipline.

This special day can simply carry a wonderful, floral expression of your love and admiration of a woman, along with your esteem and praise for noteworthy accomplishments. Some other ways you can celebrate after you’ve ordered flowers and learn more about challenges girls and women face include:

  • Reading books like “I Am Malala”
  • Buying the Women for Women International Cookbook
  • Walking to raise money for clean water and sanitation
  • Research women’s topics on equality, education and empowerment
