April 21, 2016 / Blooms Today

April 22 marks the 46th Earth Day, and many credit it with having launched the Clean Air ActClean Water ActEndangered Species Act and other environmental laws and regulations. Its main mission is to broaden awareness worldwide on developing healthy, sustainable lifestyles, addressing climate change and protecting the Earth. The Earth Day Network claims more than 50,000 partners in nearly 200 countries. has embraced Earth Day and environmental awareness all along by partnering with the National Forest Foundation. Founded in 1993 and chartered by Congress, this non-profit partner of the U.S. Forest Service brings people together to restore and enhance our national forests and grasslands ~ an admirable mission, for sure.

Plant a Tree In Honor of Your Loved One

In addition to sending fresh flowers to someone you care about, you can also purchase “Trees of Tribute”. This special 10-tree package assures that the National Forest Foundation will plant 10 trees in honor of whomever you specify. You nor your recipient receive the seeds or trees. The foundation staff knows precisely how, when and where to plant your 10 trees in one of our national forests. You receive a personalized certificate suitable for framing or simply forwarding to your special person in whose honor you purchased these trees.

Trees in our national forests are challenged every year with wildfires, harmful insects, severe weather events and disease. Across less than a decade, the National Forest Foundation has identified issues and implemented replanting programs from reforesting conifer trees in Montana to the American chestnut restoration in Appalachia. Millions of trees have been planted, and you can play a part in this crucial program to keeping our national forests appropriately lush and environmentally-balanced for their tree population.

From the first Earth Day mobilizing some 20 million Americans, the movement went global in 1990, and an unprecedented one billion people are expected to participate in something, somewhere on the planet, this year. People everywhere are inspired and challenged to plant trees, recycle as much as possible, clean up trash in parks, learn about climate change, attend an eco-fair, patronize green businesses and become aware of the impact our presence has on our environment.
