National Parents Day: An Opportunity to Acknowledge Extraordinary Role

July 19, 2017 / Blooms Today

That parents are a key component to well-balanced, well-mannered children is undisputed. They are the focal points from which a young child develops and reflects language, mannerisms, attitudes, habits and character. Robert Fulghum, author of “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten,” has been quoted as saying: “Don’t worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.”

Classic-All-WhiteThen there are the funny guys, Ogden Nash among them, who once quipped: “Parents were invented to make children happy by giving them something to ignore.” The whole parenting adventure is filled with surprises, joy, disappointments, unpopular decision-making and an abiding unconditional love.

National Parents’ Day was established as the fourth Sunday in July and is a resolution by the U.S. Congress which was signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1994. It’s not a public holiday, but a national observance, and a worthy one at that, acknowledging the important role of parents and encouraging nothing short of excellence in the parent-child connection.

Dramatic-EffectsOf course, that’s the idea in a perfect world, and we don’t live there. Many wonderful parents, however, are recognized on this day with thankfulness from children, teens and grown up kids. Parents get smarter in the eyes of kids who once battled them on everything from curfew to car privileges, and most parents become treasured – flaws ‘n all – as their children become responsible adults and especially when they become parents themselves.
